History

Caymus Vineyards was founded in 1972 by Charles Wagner. The vineyard, situated on the family's estate in the Rutherford District of the Napa Valley, is particularly known for its 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wines.

Their Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has been released every year since the first production of just 240 cases in 1972, with production remaining at the same level since the 1989 vintage. The first Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon was made in 1975 and it is produced from outstanding lots that have been given extended barrel ageing.

Since 1984, Charles Wagner’s son, Chuck, has directed the innovative viticultural practices at Caymus. Renowned amongst wine enthusiasts, both father and son were elected to Wine Spectator’s Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2007, Chuck Wagner also received the Wine Spectator’s ‘Distinguished Service Award’.

Viticulture and Vinification

The Wagners' 60 acre vineyard forms the foundation of the two Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon wines. However, Chuck Wagner is a great believer in a achieving complexity and layered flavours by blending fruit from multiple plots. For this reason, he has taken over the farming of other select vineyards throughout Napa Valley. These vineyards vary in location, ranging from the valley floor to mountain slopes. In addition, Wagner purchases grapes from other Napa Valley growers who have long been associated with the winery.

Each site is tended according to its specific soil type, climate, slope and orientation. During harvest, these vineyards are picked in successive tries in order to select the ripest grapes during each pass. Great attention is also paid to the vinification process. Maceration times, fermentation temperatures, the type and toast level of French oak barrels, and the length of barrel ageing are all carefully considered.

Caymus’ Special Selection has the unprecedented honour of twice being selected as Wine Spectator’s ‘Wine of the Year’ for both the 1984 and 1990 vintages.
