PINGUS
Pingus,
a new and immensely successful winery in the
Ribera del Duero region of northern Spain, has
produced astonishing results, and attained a
prestigious reputation, in a very short period of
time. Run by the young, Danish winemaker, Peter
Sisseck, yields are kept incredibly low to ensure
quality and purity of fruit, resulting in
extremely concentrated wines, with a miniscule
allocation to match.
The wine is made with fruit from ancient
tempranillo vines, originating from a small, 2.5
hectare, plot in Barosso and an even smaller, 1.5
hectare, plot in San Cristobal. Since 2000,
biodynamic viticulture has been applied to the
vines and resulting in even smaller yields. Only
500 cases of the first wine are made in a typical
vintage and 4,000 cases of the second wine. The
single-barrel cuvee, Amelia, is made from a parcel
of one-hundred year old vines and the 2005 vintage
produced enough wine to fill 300 bottles.
The 2004 Pingus has achieved a perfect 100 score
from Robert Parker, who has described the wine as
"offering everything". Indeed, no Pingus wine this
century has scored below 95 points!
