SILVER OAK
In early 1971, Ray Duncan was
invited to invest in vineyard property in the Napa Valley. Captivated by its
beautiful vistas and open land, Ray bought 750 acres of pastures, orchards, and
vineyards. Realizing the excellent growing potential of his recent acquisition
he enlisted the aid of Justin Meyer in planting and cultivating the vineyards
that would later become the basis for Silver Oak Cellars.
 Justin had been a
member of the Christian Brothers, where he spent fifteen years learning all
aspects of wine production. When he finally decided to leave the order he was in
possession of a wealth of experience and a single purpose—to build a winery and
make the best Cabernet in the world.
Following the well-established tradition of
many French wineries, Justin wanted to create a Cabernet-only winery. The
concept was revolutionary in America at the time, and appealed to Ray’s
interests and love of adventure. Together the two men built Silver Oak Cellars
into one of America’s most renowned wine brands.
