Château Cheval Blanc
The estate of Château Cheval Blanc is situated in the furthest corner of St Emilion, bordering on to Pomerol, and
offers a very curious mixture of soil and sub-soil areas which change nature at each step. At one point, there
are heavy soils over a clay bedrock; at another, there are light soils over a plain gravelly base, or else gravel
soil on an iron pan bed.
The result of this diversity of soils and the extremely well chosen selection of grape varieties, combined
with the assiduous care taken over the wine growing and wine making, gives the wine of Château Cheval Blanc a great
deal of mellowness, body and delicacy, plus a delicious bouquet, but most particularly, a distinctive style
which make it always recognisable and more and more in demand.
Until 1998 the vineyard was the property of the Fourcaud-Laussac family for 150 years. It was then acquired
privately by French entrepreneur Bernhard Arnhoult. The vineyard covers a surface area of 35 hectares, unchanged
since 1850. The Fourcaud-Laussac family never stopped making every possible improvement, in the drainage, the
selection of root stock, the installations, without disturbing the choice of grapes used and preserving the
maximum of old vines, a token of the ever-increasing quality of Château Cheval Blanc wines.
