History
The wines of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC), situated around the village of Vosne-Romanée,
are the most revered in all of Burgundy.
The Domaine’s land-holdings have gradually been built-up since 1232, when the Abbey of Saint Vivant in Vosne
acquired 1.8 hectares of vineyard. This was subsequently renamed Romanée in 1631 by the de Croonembourg family
who expanded the landholdings over a 130-year period, prior to selling off the property to the Prince de Conti,
who named the vineyard Romanée-Conti.
Subsequent owners acquired prime vineyards in Échézeaux, Grands Échézeaux, Richebourg and La Tâche. All of
the Domaine’s vineyards are Grand Cru in status and mostly produce Pinot Noir based wines that are rich and
complex, yet elegant and sublime. Master of Wine Clive Coates explains, “… this is the purest, most aristocratic
and most intense example of Pinot Noir you could possibly imagine.” A highly sought after Chardonnay-based white
wine, Le Montrachet, is also produced.
Co-owned by the de Villaine and Leroy/Roch families, today the Domaine is managed by Aubert de Villaine and
Henri-Frederic Roch. The complex land-ownership laws that are still prevalent in Burgundy (a remnant of the
Napoleonic era) means that the de Villaine land is shared amongst ten family members, whilst the Leroy sisters
each own twenty-five percent of their family’s share.(read more)
Viticulture and Vinification
Second generation winemaker, Bernard Noblet, ensures that the harvest and winemaking processes are highly
traditional yet meticulously controlled.
The organically cultivated vineyards lie on well drained slopes facing east and south-east. The soil is iron-rich
limestone on a base of rock and marl. Five hectares in La Tâche and Grands Échézeaux are cultivated biodynamically,
where the vines are only treated with natural preparations and according to a strict lunar timetable. The yields
are extraordinarily low, just one of the reasons DRC’s wines are some of the most sought-after in the world.
The selection for all wines is rigorous and the grapes are sorted into small baskets that are then individually
examined on triage tables before being processed. No de-stemming takes place; instead whole bunches of grapes are
vinified with a lengthy vatting time at a low temperature.
The wines spend sixteen to twenty months in oak, especially supplied from the Troncais forests, before bottling.
There is no filtration and cask racking is performed if required. Fining is traditional, using egg whites.
